What is tooth sensitivity ?

When teeth are sensitive, everyday activities like brushing, eating, drinking causes temporary pain which is very irritating and annoying for the patient. Sensitivity most often is caused by wear of the enamel or due to bone loss which exposes the root of the tooth.

Sometimes tooth sensitivity is caused by a cavity, fracture of the tooth, whitening or deep fillings. The best way of treating sensitivity is to visit the dentist who would identify the underlying cause. Depending on the cause the treatment for sensitivity can be different for each patient.

Sensitive teeth can be treated by seeing a dentist and also taking certain precautions on your own. 

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when dentin (a layer of the tooth underneath the enamel) or cementum (layer covering the root) become exposed along the gum line. Some causes are:

  • Gum disease
  • Temporary teeth sensitivity
  • Tooth grinding

What are the treatments for sensitive teeth?

If you have sensitive teeth, then make sure do not skip dental care routine. Here is what you can do to treat sensitivity:

  • Visit the dentist: When the sensitivity becomes too much to handle, it is probably time to see your dentist.
  • Try a sensitizing toothpaste: The best sensitive teeth remedy is to use a sensitizing toothpaste. Your regular toothpaste may not work as well, so go for a toothpaste that is specially designed for sensitive teeth.
  • Follow a good oral hygiene routine: Do not neglect oral care routine, especially having sensitive teeth. Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush such as the ones from Oral-B that are gentle on your teeth and prevent gum loss.
